Week 42 of 2024 from Thread Head

Just a few works in progress this week -

I put my other socks on hold and started a simple pair.
Some warmer temperatures this week! I see a few ends I need to weave in.

Photos from Around -

Poor Miss Molly sadly waiting for her most beloved to come home.
Nine eggs today - such a variety of shells.
Sparkle seems impressed too.
Well deserved treats for the hens.
Miss Maggie keeps an eye on the hens, but from a distance.
GingerSnap has been unwell again and sleeps a lot, and everywhere!
In the mint, in the garden,
In sunbeams,
Even ...

Week 32 of 2024 from Thread Head

This week I finished a pair of socks that had been on the needles for a couple months-

My fourth pair of handspun socks so far this year. This one from a BFL/Nylon blend I dyed and spun four years ago.
Cooler temperatures this week, but because I am running out of some of the colours I have had to shift the colours/temperatures sequence.

Photos from Around -

Ginger cat's cone is off - his leg and other parts have healed well.
This is the closest Maggie will get to him, and only because that is where her food ...

Week 31 of 2024 from Thread Head

This week I finished the pair of socks I started on our road trip-

I knit socks toe-up, two-at-a-time, on one long circular needle, from both ends of the ball of yarn to be able to us up of the yarn, and the small bundle is all I had left - about 1m (1yd).
I knit a regular 64 stitch sock (with a gusset and eye-of-partridge heel flap), but added a simple cross over stitch pattern (4 stitch repeat, over 2 rows), just to make the knitting more interesting.
The socks are from a BFL/Nylon fibre that I dyed. I ...

Week 30 of 2024 from Thread Head

Works in Progress -

A warm week for the temperature blanket.
This week we went on a road trip, and this was the project that I took with me. A pair of socks knit with yarn I spun during TdF.

Photos from the Road Trip -

We drove to Alberta to visit family, and had such a lovely time.
Passed a salt mine in Saskatchewan, it always reminds me of winter - there was lots of smoke in the air from forest fires.
Stopped overnight in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, and saw Mac the Moose, the worlds tallest moose (a title reclaimed from one ...

To Do Tuesday #81 from The Quilt Yarn

My task from 2 weeks ago was to finish my stitching in the ditch of my background filler project - Done! While happy with that I am a bit anxious about how the middle section will quilt out as I got the two seams running through the orange fabric. Not sure whether this will work out so good, but we shall see.

That's the only task I had put down as we had our annual quilt show over here and I knew that I would not do anything much else.

The quilt show was great, even more so as I ...

Week 20 of 2024 from Thread Head

Still lots of works in progress -

I have been spinning some locks from a local shepherd. They are a Wensleydale/Romney cross. I am flick carding the individual locks to open them up before spinning - something new for me.
The latest handspun socks are long enough to start the ribbing.
A few more medallions added to the piece of tatting.
A good selection of temperatures this week for the blanket.

Photos from Around -

The chicks are now 13 days old, and are really changing.
Miss Maggie still keeps an eye on them, and they love her.

There are lots of ...

Still Here! from The Quilt Yarn

We are by now in the midst of our kitchen renovation...all the contents of the kitchen are placed across the family room and it is very messy indeed. We have set up a tiny coffee station with the microwave on a table, but have no sink or water in the kitchen, hence need to run to the laundry for every little bit. It's interesting to say the least. Dinners are a hassle as we also have no cook top as yet. During last week the work men were in and out so I did not do much at ...

Week 9 of 2024 from Thread Head

Not much crafting this week, it was more about cooking and baking (my quest to be more self sufficient means there is more food preparation which I enjoy too).

The only thing I finished was a little pincushion for my sister out of an old Christmas light reflector from our sister-in-law (I think they might have come from one of her grandparents). I have made a few pincushions like this and find them a great size. It is stuffed with crushed walnut shells (lizard litter), with a little piece of textured rubber on the bottom so it stays in place ...

Having a Break from The Quilt Yarn

Just checking in for a short post. I have done my shoulder in and am pretty much out of action. Went to the physio but that just seems to make it worse. So have got nothing much to show for.

However, the table runner got finished. Put the binding on and handstitched it to the back. This is the second sample for an upcoming workshop. Should be interesting to see how people go with that.

I did baste my other scrap quilt and made a start on it, however did not take any photos as yet. Am about half way ...

To Do Tuesday #25 from The Quilt Yarn

Another week gone!

My tasks from last week included:
- photographing my panel baby quilt and put it up as a listing on Etsy. I am hoping that that quilt will go fairly fast as I am running out of space✅
- hand stitch the binding on the quilt above and start writing up the pattern. This will take me a couple of weeks, I think, as it is a while since I pieced this together.
- baste one of the charity quilts ready to be quilted. Want to complete at least one as I want to freemotion quilt another table runner for ...

To Do Tuesday #24 from The Quilt Yarn

My list from last week was small and included:

- finish off the ditching around my little baby quilt pattern, then do a little bit of ruler work and hopefully make a start on the binding.✅
- finish off hand stitching the binding on my panel baby quilt and if weather allows to take some photos- partially done!
- drop off all the charity quilts and pick up some new quilts to finish off
- continue plugging away at knitting the sock.

Three out of four things completed...very happy with that!

My little baby quilt went much faster than I expected as it ...

Catch Up from Thread Head

Canning season is finally wrapping up (just a few more things to make), so time for a catch up!

I finished a couple of pairs of socks-
#10 for 12 pairs of hanspun socks in 2022,
and #11. Both 2x2 ribbed socks.
My son made me a pair of sock blockers out of a piece of acrylic and the laser cutter.

I made a new pair of slippers - the pattern is the Wayfarer Shoes from Twig and Tale. Genius pattern, easy to sew (all the seams are enclosed), and really nice to wear. I made mine out of an old ...

Lots of Projects! from Thread Head

I started a new quilting project -

A simple half-square triangle quilt.
Hard to believe just those two piles of cut squares will make a queen size quilt, but I think my math is right. This will be a long term project for when I just want to sew for a bit.
I cut 5" squares - 313 of light fabric and 313 of dark fabric.
I am piecing them like this, and trimming the blocks to 4+1/2" (using one of my favourite rulers - one reason I am making a quilt like this. The main reason is because I wanted ...

Some Storm Projects from Thread Head

We have had three storms in the past two weeks - two Colorado Lows with an Alberta Clipper in between!
So lots of at home time for crafting - I started a few storm projects.

This is another "Easy" scarf by Martina Behm. Made from 56g of handspun.
I love the pattern - it is perfect for small amounts of handspun, it's fun to knit, plus really nice to wear.

This is a piece of crazy quilting inspired by the snippet scrolls I saw in the Summer 2021 issue of Quilting Arts Magazine.
I had a set of door knobs from our ...

A Couple of Finishes from Thread Head

I finished a couple of knitting projects recently.

A pair of handspun socks (this is number 5 for the year - my goal is to knit 12 pairs of handspun socks in 2022). More details can be found here.
A handspun shawl/scarf. More details can be found here.

For the past couple of months my husband has been working in Vancouver (on the west coast of Canada).
He sends me pictures like this-

The view from his apartment.

Shortie Socks and So Many Photos! from Thread Head

I finished knitting a pair of shortie socks last week.

I have tried other shortie sock patterns in the past, but the heel was too loose or there was too much fabric on the top of my foot where it meets my leg. So I just experimented this time.
I am really happy with the results, and they fit great.
I used short rows across the top of the foot to lessen the amount of fabric, plus short rows on the back of the foot to bring the heel up. Then tightened up the ribbing so they aren't loose ...

Spinning and Knitting from Thread Head

I finished spinning everyday in February with a few more skeins in my stash - they are all now works in progress or finished objects.

A merino/nylon blend - knitting shortie socks.
I blended some different fibres (handdyed merino/silk, pearl fibre, two more types of silk and some silver sparkle),
and spun a fingering weight yarn (~180g) - knitting a cowl.
This is BFL wool,
I spun to make some fingerless mitts.
It is a free pattern on Ravelry - Cozy Cuffed Mitts by Karen Everett.
I finished knitting a pair of socks with a BFL/Nylon blend with yarn I spun ...

More Spinning and Storms from Thread Head

Finished knitting a pair of socks -

I knit them out of merino/mohair fibre that I dyed and spun.
I didn't know how I would like the ribbing on the sole of the foot, but I don't even notice it and the socks are really comfy (the merino/mohair makes a difference too).

Since I am spinning everyday in February, I have got a lot done. These are all from fibre I dyed-

BFL/Nylon blend for socks.
About a sport weight yarn (my preferred for socks). This is ...

Socks and Spinning from Thread Head

This week I finished knitting a pair of socks out of handspun yarn.

They are regular toe-up, two-at-a-time, 64 stitches, on a 2.5mm needle socks.
This is the yarn,
and the fibre I dyed - a BFL/Nylon blend.
This week I spun this fibre that I had dyed - a Merino/Mohair blend (the first time I have used this blend for socks).
It spun up lovely, and ended up being quite fine (a fingering weight), I thought maybe the mohair would puff up a bit after finishing, but it didn't.
I decided to join in the DRK Spin ...

Day 19 - Socks from Thread Head

I finished another pair of handspun socks.

These are made from a BFL/Nylon blend that I dyed and spun.

Shades of green and burgundy.

I knit these two-at-a-time, toe-up and used almost all the yarn.

All the best!♥︎
